W-SMART 2013 International Workshop Program

W-SMART 2013 International Workshop

Sustainability Challenges & Adaptation Strategies

October 15 to 18, 2013 in Israel

img

An experience-sharing forum for local governments and water utilities including :

– An interactive assessment of current efforts of integrating emerging technology solutions and adapting water resource preservation

– Management strategies to face growing climate change impacts and eco-sustainability challenges with regard to either rapidly increasing water shortages in “dry” regions or greater frequencies of natural disasters.

Discussion sessions

Security and Safety Issues – Current water security challenges and rationale for investing in sustainable security & safety of water supply systems in an unpredictable environment – including both regulatory and operational perspectives. This session will provide a discussion forum on the assessment of lessons learned from the Crisis Management Training Exercise conducted by MEKOROT and MEI ASHKELON and exchanging experiences on current Crisis Management Training (CMT) practice, guidelines, the role of technology innovation, and regulatory environment.

Local Governments & Water Utilities Facing Eco-Sustainability Challenges – Discussion Forum with Elected Officials, Utility Officers, and Technical Experts will focus on sustainability challenges facing water utilities and lessons learned from recent cases of disaster response and recovery (e.g. New York City; Israel; etc.). Impacts of sustainability driven regulatory frame-work on utility needs and strategies for upgrading disaster resiliency of metropolitan water utilities will be explored. It will cover issues related to emerging regulations; public awareness; business continuity strategies; technology solutions assessment; ICT deployment; etc.,

Mitigating Climate Change Impacts & Water Utilities Adaptation Strategies – Discussion will focus on regional water resource governance models and emerging regulations, water supply management strategies and contingency measures facing growing public concerns with regard to eco-sustainability risks. Adaptation challenges, integration of renewable water resources (e.g. desalination; water reuse) and their deployment strategies will be discussed, including issues related to public awareness, economic, operational, energy efficiency, safety, and other core issues involved in the deployment of renewable and reused water resources.

“Smarter” Utility Networks & Innovative Technology Solutions – This session will provide a demonstration platform for assessment of innovative technology solutions and smart monitoring systems in water utility management and a discussion forum on current R&D initiatives undertaken by the W-SMART R&D Center. The role and opportunities for creating ICT based new services for both consumers (AMI; Smart Grid solutions, etc.) to promote customers’ participation in sustainability initiatives and current utility managers’ programs to improve energy efficiency, assets optimization and system monitoring & control will be discussed.

Break-Out Discussion Sessions – These sessions will focus on the way forward, addressing concerns with regard to threats and opportunities for creative service businesses and re-adaptation strategies of responding to eco-sustainability risks; rationale for emerging regulations and business cases for investment in innovation for “smarter” water supply systems; benchmarking measures for impacts assessment of adaptation strategies and deployment of innovative technology solutions for reducing eco-sustainability risks; needs and collaboration opportunities for local governments and the water industry facing emerging regulations; other rising issues.

Professional Tours

Attending Delegates will have opportunities to visit sites where innovative technologies and methods are in operation and/or testing phases. The visits include national large-scale desalination and water re-use systems, as well as various beta testing sites for innovative new technologies. In addition, it will be possible to view urban water innovations.

Crisis Management Exercise

Crisis Management Exercise will be jointly conducted by MEKOROT and MEI ASHKELON with the participation of W-SMART delegates as Observers and will be followed by an Exercise Assessment & Debriefing Session.

WaTech 2013

MEKOROT would also like to invite the Workshop delegates to attend the WaTech Conference, scheduled for the 22nd to the 25th of October, which will emphasize key technologies for efficient exploitation of natural resources (Water, Soil, Energy & Materials). The purpose of WATECH 2013 is to bring together Israeli & International Business Executives, Political Decisions Makers and Leading Researches in order to provide an industry platform for showcases of state-of-the-art technology solutions. For more information you are kindly invited to visit the WATECH site at http://www.watec-israel.com/.
